National Apartment Council Hosts Calgary Roundtable to Unite Private Apartment Developers

Published on 5 Nov, 2025

Calgary, AB – The National Apartment Council successfully hosted a pivotal meeting of private apartment developers at The Ranchmen’s Club in Calgary on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. The session brought together members of the underrepresented private Canadian apartment development community to strengthen their collective voice on national housing policy and federal engagement.

The event was part of the National Apartment Council’s ongoing effort to unite private developers across the country, ensuring their priorities are recognized alongside institutional landlords, homebuilders, and suppliers – groups that currently dominate the national housing conversation at the federal level.

Discussions at the Calgary roundtable focused on issues critical to the sector, including pre-empting new rent control policies, environmental and building code regulation, reintroduction of the Multiple Unit Residential Building (MURB) program, lapsing of HST reform on new rental buildings, and the evolving landscape of CMHC financing. Participants also addressed the need for greater tax clarity from the Canada Revenue Agency and emphasized the importance of direct federal advocacy with the Ministries of Housing and Finance.

“Private apartment developers are the backbone of Canada’s purpose-built rental supply, yet for too long, our voices have been fragmented,” said Derek Lobo, Founder and President of the National Apartment Council. “With the federal government’s renewed focus on housing, this is our opportunity to collaborate, inform policy, and ensure our sector’s concerns are not only heard but acted upon.”

The Calgary session built on a series of earlier virtual consultations with more than 200 developers across Canada, as well as successful in-person meetings held in Winnipeg and London. Calgary marked the Council’s first in-person session in Western Canada, strengthening The National Apartment Council’s mission to unite private apartment developers nationwide.

The National Apartment Council continues to expand its membership base and regional representation, with further meetings planned in other major cities across Canada.
